Water quality is the single most critical factor in crayfish health, growth, and survival.

Water temperature is the master variable governing crayfish metabolism, growth, and reproduction.
In tropical climates, water temperature is relatively stable. In subtropical regions, consider heating for winter or using deeper ponds with thermal buffering.
Crayfish are territorial and require adequate shelter to reduce stress, aggression, and cannibalism — especially during molting.
10–15 cm diameter PVC pipes cut to 20–30 cm lengths. The most popular and cost-effective option. Can be connected in clusters or laid individually. Weight with gravel to prevent floating. Each shelter houses 1–2 crayfish.
Broken or whole terracotta pots provide excellent natural-looking shelter. Lay them on their sides or break them into halves. The porous material also provides surface area for beneficial bacteria and algae. Great for ornamental setups.
Wooden pallets, coconut shells, bamboo sections, and rock piles all work well. Natural materials blend into the pond and provide multiple crevice sizes. Avoid treated wood (chemicals leach into water) and sharp-edged materials.
Standard concrete blocks (cinder blocks) stacked in rows create excellent communal shelter. The hollow cells provide individual hiding spots. Can be stacked 2–3 high. Very durable and long-lasting. Good for commercial operations.
Aquatic plants like water hyacinth, duckweed, and marginal grasses provide natural shelter and improve water quality. Floating plants offer shade, reducing temperature fluctuations. Plants also serve as supplementary food and improve oxygen levels.
Minimum 1 shelter per crayfish during molting periods. Space shelters evenly across the pond, not clustered. Place near edges and corners where crayfish naturally congregate. More shelter = less aggression = better survival. Budget 20–50 shelters per 100 m².
The pond bottom composition affects water chemistry, foraging behavior, and burrowing.
Clay holds water, buffers pH with calcium reserves, and provides a natural bottom for foraging. Compacted clay forms the best base for crayfish ponds. Most tropical crayfish are adapted to muddy clay bottoms in the wild.
A combination of sand over clay provides good drainage with water retention. Some species prefer sandier bottoms for burrowing. Mix ratios of 30% sand / 70% clay work well for most tropical species.
In tank-based systems, pea gravel or river sand provides good substrate. It's easier to clean than mud, harbors beneficial nitrifying bacteria, and allows crayfish to exhibit natural digging behaviors.
Water depth affects temperature stability, oxygen levels, and crayfish behavior.
Oxygen is the most critical daily management factor. Low DO causes stress, reduced feeding, and mass mortality.
Phytoplankton photosynthesis is the primary oxygen source during daylight hours. Wind-driven surface agitation also adds oxygen. Maintain a moderate green water bloom for consistent oxygen production.
Paddle wheel aerators, fountain aerators, or air blowers with diffuser stones. Essential for intensive systems and during warm nights when photosynthesis stops but respiration continues. Size aeration to your pond volume.
Dawn is the most dangerous time — after a night of respiration with no photosynthesis. Overcast days following warm nights can cause mass die-offs. Monitor DO especially between 4–6 AM and be ready to aerate.
Consistency is key. Follow a daily routine to catch problems early.
